There\u2019s a good reason for that. Coming out hot on the heels of <i>Baldur\u2019s Gate<\/i>, this offering by Black Isle Studios (BG\u2019s publisher) didn\u2019t make much of a splash commercially at first, but went on to gain cult classic status. Console gamers of the younger generation will probably never have heard of it, and that\u2019s a shame, because if there\u2019s one game that puts the \u201cRP\u201d back into <acronym title=\"Role-Playing Game\">RPG<\/acronym>, this is it, and you may hear it hailed as, quite simply, the best RPG ever. This is, of course, an exaggeration, as such claims usually are, and it all boils down to a matter of personal taste in the end, but the fact remains that what this game does well, it does <i>extremely<\/i> well, and I\u2019ve never played anything quite like it, either before or since.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This isn\u2019t to say that the game is perfect. Far from it, actually, especially by modern standards. The graphics are dated, and the interface is rather clunky; if you\u2019ve played BG before, it\u2019s the same isometric view, movement scheme and dialogue system. There are also quite a few bugs and quite a lot of content that either got cut or wasn\u2019t fleshed out entirely, making the game feel somewhat unpolished in places. Moreover, if you\u2019re a fan of combat, I shall warn you to keep your distance straight away. Not only is it really not the focus of the game (i.e. there\u2019s very little of it), but saying that it\u2019s not streamlined would be an understatement. It\u2019s based on the same <acronym title=\"Advanced Dungeons &amp; Dragons\">AD&amp;D<\/acronym> rules as BG, but the implementation is rather slapdash. There are mods available, as with any PC game, which focus on squishing bugs, restoring cut content and making the interface more pleasing to the eye, but nothing that really improves the combat.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/grafskaya.club\/mysst\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Motley-crew.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6283\" title=\"Motley crew\" src=\"https:\/\/grafskaya.club\/mysst\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Motley-crew-300x216.jpg\" alt=\"Motley crew\" width=\"270\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.grafskaya.club\/mysst\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Motley-crew-300x216.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.grafskaya.club\/mysst\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Motley-crew-415x300.jpg 415w, https:\/\/www.grafskaya.club\/mysst\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Motley-crew.jpg 425w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 270px) 100vw, 270px\" \/><\/a>Still, don\u2019t let this detract you from PST\u2019s real strengths, which are characterisation, plot and, most importantly, dialogue. The latter is detailed, varied, abundant and steeped in witticisms. It\u2019s also strongly dependent on the protagonist\u2019s attributes. The characters are probably the craziest bunch of misfits you\u2019ve ever encountered; they certainly were to me. As for the plot, it revolves around such notions as responsibility, redemption, justice and human nature; the seminal quote from the game is, in fact, \u201cwhat can change the nature of a man?\u201d To sum things up, this is for people who enjoy immersive, engrossing, thought-provoking storytelling, and if you fit that bill, this game may just become the latest entry on your \u2018all-time greats\u2019 list.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As a final point of interest, 2017 saw the release of <em>Planescape: Torment Enhanced Edition<\/em> (including graphical improvements and some cut content), by Beamdog, but also a spiritual successor to <i>Planescape: Torment<\/i>, named <a href=\"https:\/\/torment.inxile-entertainment.com\/\"><i>Torment: Tides of Numenera<\/i><\/a>, which broke all funding records on Kickstarter, but has since met with tepid reviews.<\/p>\n<div class=\"csRow\">\n<div class=\"csColumn\" style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px; float: left; width: 41.9%;\" data-csstartpoint=\"0\" data-csendpoint=\"402\" data-cswidth=\"41.9%\" data-csid=\"84ad0c46-66e5-8d5a-b501-8b4c5b4555d5\">\n<p><a title=\"Planescape: Torment\" href=\"http:\/\/www.satrapov.net\/mysst\/detailed-reviews-n-z\/planescape-torment\/\"><strong>&lt;&lt; Back to: Planescape: Torment<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"csColumnGap\" style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px; float: left; width: 28.4%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.satrapov.net\/mysst\/wp-content\/plugins\/advanced-wp-columns\/assets\/js\/plugins\/views\/img\/1x1-pixel.png\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"csColumn\" style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px; float: left; width: 29.7%;\" data-csstartpoint=\"675\" data-csendpoint=\"960\" data-cswidth=\"29.7%\" data-csid=\"5e98c54d-d7ea-b46e-af1f-efb302f5fd6a\">\n<p><strong><a title=\"Storyline\" href=\"http:\/\/www.satrapov.net\/mysst\/detailed-reviews-n-z\/planescape-torment\/storyline\/\">Forward to: Storyline &gt;&gt;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What can change the nature of a man?
